Loudoun Valley High School Field Hockey went to Briar Woods this evening to face a team Valley had never beaten.  The seniors on this team, were "Mercied Rule" their freshman and sophomore years and lost 3-0 last year at Valley.

On this evening the game did not start positively for Valley.  Briar Woods generated a Corner Play within the first 2 minutes of the game and played in or near the Valley defensive circle for the first ten minutes of the game.  Junior Goalie, Genna Marsh was a ninja in goal and stopped everything thrown at her except one shot.  On that shot Carlea Dawson made a diving stop behind Marsh for a remarkable save.

It did not seem that Valley could generate much offense or keep possession of the ball.  Valley would generate a couple of runs down the sideline, but couldn't do much more than that, until they generated a corner.  Junior Forward, Avery Goodlin, injected the ball to Senior Midfielder, Eva Swartz, who drove the ball to the back of the net for the first score of the game.  End of First Half, Vikings 1- Briar Woods 0.

The second half started strong for the Vikings.  The goal near the end of the frst half gave them momentum and they seemed to attack more.  However, that did not last long.  Briar Woods went back to dominating possession of the ball and kept attacking the Valley Goal, but they could not get the ball past the wall known as Genna Marsh.

On a 16 yard hit(a free hit by Valley).  Junior Sweeper, Rachel McFadden took the hit at the top of Valley's defensive circle.  The hit was deflected by Briar Woods, Rachel got the ball back and proceeded to make a pass to the right to Senior Midfielder Eva Swartz, who drove to the right to about the 40 yard line, where she then passed the ball up to Senior Right Midfielder, Claire Bryant.  Claire dribbled the ball to the 50 yard and hit Senior Forward Sarah Thompson on the sideline at Briar Woods 45 yard line.  Sarah generated a foot fault on a Briar Woods Player.  Sarah took the free hit quickly and raced down the right sideline with the ball.  Thompson then hit a crossing laser from the sidline that crossed in front of the goal.  Junior Forward mad a diving touch pass to Senior Forward Kate Ashton, who sent the ball into the back of the goal for a 2-0 lead.

Valley scored one more time at the 14:31 mark in the second half on another corner.  Junior, all purpose player, Avery Goodlin, now playing Midfield, injected the ball to Sarah Thompson for a beautiful drive on the goal for Valley's third tally.

Briar Woods did not give up.  they kept attacking and Valley would bend, but they would not break.  Freshman Mollie Kemp subbed in on defense late in the second half and made a defensive stop behind Marsh.  Valley just keeps getting contributions from a multitude of players at many different positions creating matchup challenges for their opponents.
